MN Respiratory Therapy Licensure Passes!
This is a wonderful time for Respiratory Therapists and our patients in Minnesota! On Friday May 22, 2009 Governor Pawlenty signed our Licensure legislation into law. What this means is that no one can practice Respiratory Therapy and call themselves a Respiratory Therapist
without having met the criteria in the Licensure Statute. The new licensure law will go into effect after our registration deadline of June 30, 2009.
Licensure is governed by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice, just as registration was. The process for licensure will be very similar, if not identical to registration. This year we will renew our registration on or before June 30, 2009. Next year we will renew our license on or before June 30, 2010. The criteria for CEU's has not changed, you are still required to have 24 CEU's in a 2 year period. As you may suspect, the MN Board of Medical Practice
is updating their system and information regarding our new licensure. Please be patient as they update.
The MSRC is very fortunate to have such a great team working on this legislation! A huge thank you to all of you who have supported this process with your presence at the Capitol, phone meetings, and general moral support! The committee members are Carrie Bourassa, Julie Clarke, Lori Rausch, and Lisa Hamel. A special thanks to Ruth Rinker for helping to interview the lobbyists. There are a few people who have put in a great deal of effort, and I would like to
take time to thank them properly now.
Alex Adams, for stepping up to the plate and getting Senator Dibble to be our author in the Senate, and for testifying at the hearings. The MSRC is truly fortunate to have you taking such an active role!
The insight and experience of Cheryl West at the AARC is irreplaceable. Wow, what a font of knowledge. Cheryl has gone the extra mile helping us iron out the language in the beginning. What a valuable person we have to tap into at the AARC!
We never would have gotten the licensure off the ground without the efforts of Carrie Bourassa. To echo your most famous words Carrie, "YOU ROCK". Thank you for putting this at such a high priority, and for all the time and effort you spent working on our bill. You have been an absolute joy, a pit-bull, but most of all professional through all of this!
I don't think we could have chosen any better lobbyist to help us in our effort! Bill Amberg has been so easy to work with, forthcoming with information, knowledgeable about the whole process, and timely in his communications with us. It has been like we are his only clients. I know he has spent more time at the capitol than we can possibly imagine. We could not have done this without Bill!
Join me in thanking this group of people for all their efforts! The MSRC is planning a celebration during Respiratory Care Week this fall. Stay tuned for details.
